Intercellular Junctions and Types of Epithelia

    Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelia

This type is found almost exclusively in the respiratory system and is also called respiratory epithelium.
    • Examine the thick basement membrane of the epithelium. Notice that the nuclei are located at varying levels throughout the epithelium. Observe the cilia lining the epithelium.

What is meant by the term "polarity" as applied to epithelial cells?

Indicate three ways PCEE cells differ from simple columnar cells.
