Cells throughout the body exhibit a
great degree of variation, both in morphology and function. There
are, however, many cellular structures which are common to almost
all cell types and they will be examined in this and the following
lab.
While
looking at the slides listed below, study the appropriate diagrams
and electron micrographs (EMs) in Junqueira. Compare the very high
magnification “ultrastructural” EM appearance of organelles and
other structures with their appearance in Junqueira’s LM photographs
and in the cells on your slides. The EMs and other figures in
Junqueira are an important part of today’s lab. They will help you
understand and interpret all other EMs you will see later in the
later labs. Carefully read the text accompanying each figure as you
study it. Identify the basic structural features that characterize
each and every example you will see of each organelle.
Here's what you need to get from this
unit.
- Gain experience in the ability
to correlate two-dimensional images of organelles in both the
light microscope LM and transmission electron micrograph TEM
with their actual three-dimensional structure
- Recognize the important
cytoplasmic organelles in both light microscopes and electron
micrographs
We'll start with the
plasma membrane. |
