Treatment of Lyme disease
is divided into (1) prophylaxis and (2) treatment of active disease.
Prophylactic
-
Prompt removal of ticks.
Transmission is more likely with attachment of more than 24 hours.
-
Bug repellents and sensible
out door clothing.
-
Prophylactic use of antibiotics
is not recommended. Randomized trials indicate no difference in
infection rate.
-
Human recombinant outer-surface-protein
vaccine
(LYMErix). Available for people 15-70 who live and work in high risk areas.
How about those with active
disease?
