Monckeberg
medial calcific sclerosis is a disease of medium-sized muscular
arteries.
-
People over 50.
-
Calcium deposits in media.
-
No intimal involvement and no
vascular narrowing.
-
Calcium deposits may actually
undergo ossification.
-
Discrete transverse rings of
calcium in the radial artery may create a "goose neck" lamp feel. Deposits
are palpable.
-
Show up on X-Ray.
Even though there is no intimal
involvement, people with Monckeberg's may develop atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis
will have lumenal narrowing. (Hey, people are entitled to more than one
disease at a time.)
