The atheromatous plaque is actually a complex lesion
  • Principal cells include smooth muscle cells that migrate from the media and  macrophages from the blood stream.
  • The matrix is composed of collagen, elastic fibers and proteoglycans.

  • Finally, there is intracellular and extracellular lipid, primarily cholesterol and cholesterol esters.
