Esophagitis

This is not a bad idea.  Esophagitis can certainly cause pain, especially at night when a person is in the recumbent position. Why do you think lying down would aggravate this condition?

They can certainly bleed from the inflammation and ulceration.

It should be obvious that we need to go the source of all wisdom and understanding, the GI specialist. If you don't believe me, just ask one, they have an answer for everything, GASTROSCOPY. And if that fails, colonoscopy.
