After an agonizing week
of indecision, Mr. Baldwin informed his girlfriend of his HIV status.
Although they had been up
front and honest with each other concerning past romances, the implications
of the news left her angry and hurt. After an initial period of not wanting
to know, she agreed to HIV testing.
Her ELISA and Western Blot
were both positive. Follow-up testing revealed her CD4+ lymphocyte count
to be 650 with an HIV plasma load of 40,000. She is weighing her options,
but is leaning toward starting triple drug therapy soon. She is also in
counseling.
Mr. Baldwin and his girlfriend
are trying to work things out. She still holds him responsible for her
situation, but as they are both HIV positive and have been together for
almost two years, it seems that changing things now would only complicate
matters further. |
