Antiretroviral drug therapy

Categories include drugs that inhibit viral binding and cell entry, reverse transcriptase inhibitors, protein cleavage and viral assembly.

Co-receptor inhibitors (Selzentry)

Fusion inhibitors (Fuzeon)

Reverse transcriptase inhibitors

  • Nucleotide analogs: AZT, ddI, ddc, d4T, 3TC
  • Non-nucleotide analog inhibitors: Lamivudine
Integrase inhibitor (Raltgravir)

Protease inhibitors prevent cleavage of master viral protein into submits necessary for viral assembly.

  • Saquinavir, Indinavir, Nelfnavir

Combination therapy can reduce the plasma viral load by a 1000-fold over mono drug therapies.
