• Symmetry? Most women don't have perfectly symmetrical breasts, but they should be close to the same size.
• For women with pendulous breasts, it is helpful to have them lean forward to allow the breasts to hang free for the visual inspection.
• Skin changes?
• Dimpling or retraction
• Roughening or "orange peel appearance"
• Localized reddening and/or scaling
• Nipple discharge?

• Start by palpating the nipple and areolar skin.
• Use the pads of your fingers, not the tips.
• Progress in concentric circles so as to examine the entire breast. Remember the axillary tail goes up like a tear drop towards the axilla.
• Palpate the axilla.
