The WBC count and percentages can change dramatically.
  • Reaction to infection or tissue necrosis.
    • bacterial,  viral, fungal, mycobacterial infections
    • myocardial infarction and other conditions leading to cell death and necrosis.
  • Malignant or benign proliferative bone marrow disorders.
  • Bone marrow failure.
    • "space occupying" lesions
    • nutrient deficit
    • leukemias
  • Sequestration or peripheral destruction.
    • splenic hypertrophy (Felty's syndrome)
But keep in mind two important aspects of CBC interpretation. 
  • Quality (are the cells healthy) vs quantity  (numbers of cells)
  • And, do the numbers jive with the clinical situation.
