  • Probably immune destruction of myelin.
  • Experimentally can transmit disease with stimulated T cells.
  • CD4+ cytotoxic T cells are implicated.
  • Antibodies are also important in development of the disease.
  • Fifteen fold higher incidence if there is a first degree relative with MS.
  • Association with DR2 extended haplotype.
  • Incidence increases the further from the equator.
