Prognosis and outcomes
  • Alkylating agents induce  remission in about 50-70%.
  • Even with treatment, median survival is only about 3 years.
  • Untreated, survival is 6-12 months.
  • Biophosphonates are used to inhibit bone resorption.
  • Keep these folks well hydrated to prevent myeloma kidney.
  • Bone marrow transplant improves survival, but is noncurative.
  • Renal failure, infections and hemorrhage are leading causes of death.
  • Although hyperviscosity syndrome is not common with myeloma, it is a possibility.
