Osteoarthritis was in our differential, but it's quite a bit different. This is not her disease.
  • Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disease.
  • osteoarthritis is characterized by progressive damage and erosion of articular cartilage.
  • Inflammation is not a big part of osteoarthritis.
  • Articular cartilage is the focus, not synovium (as in RA).
  • Most often weight bearing joints.
  • When hands are involved, it's typically the distal joints.
  • The condition is progressive and can lead to joint fusion.
  • Pain and limitation of motion can be very debilitating.
