This is all adding up to a disaster for Mr. Weiser. He has at least three major alcohol related diseases, and very likely the beginning of hepatic encephalopathy.
  • Alcoholic cirrhosis combined with the manifestations of portal hypertension and esophageal varices.
  • Acute gastritis.
  • Acute alcoholic hepatitis.
So what's with hepatic encephalopathy, and how do we know if Mr. Weiser's developing it?
  • A complex neuropsychiatric condition associated with advanced liver diseases, especially in people with marked portosystemic shunting.
  • Thought to be related to inadequate removal of nitrogenous wastes by the liver.
  • Ammonia is the easy parameter to follow, although it is not the only agent responsible for the condition.
Wow, I can't get enough of this, isn't there more?             Back
