Slide 21: Familial polyposis of colon

The changes are subtle
here. You really must look at the tissue on the slide before going
to the microscope. You will see little areas of thickening of the mucosa
and that's about it. In some areas there may even be a polypoid formation
but the earliest changes are not easy to see.

This is a higher power
of the polyp area. You will find there are several polyps on your slide.
Here you may see a branching pattern of some of the colonic glands in the
region of the polyp as well as the hypercellularity. The colonic glands
have irregular shapes and contain many more epithelial cells than is called
for. You should have no trouble finding mitotic figures, yet even so, this
is not a malignancy. |
