The basic CBC consideration for all anemias comes down to:

Quantity vs Quality of the RBCs.

  • Quantity
    • Sufficient RBCs, and
    • what's the total hemoglobin? (Hgb, HCT)
  • Quality of the RBCs
    • Are they beat up? (RDW)
    • Are they small or large? (MCV)
    • Their hemoglobin content? (MCH, MCHC)
    • Do they contain funky stuff? (abnormal hemoglobin, malaria, etc.)
  • Turnover rate
    • RBC life span and
    • bone marrow capacity to make RBCs (retic count).
Enough already, give me an example.                                                Back
