Colorectal carcinoma occurs world-wide, but has its highest incidence in the United States and Western Europe.
  • The frequency in the US and Europe is ten times that of developing countries.
  • It is now clear that diet plays a significant role in the development of this malignancy.
  • Location of colonic malignancies
    • 60% are found between the splenic flexure and the anal sphincter
    • A third of all colonic cancers are within one finger length of the anal sphincter.

Colonic adenocarcinomas may remain asymptomatic for years, and as the case of Mr. Herbert illustrates, iron deficiency anemia in an elderly man means gastrointestinal cancer until proven otherwise.

So what's to be expected from a colon carcinoma?                Back
