The second AMA standard obviously addresses this issue.
  • Do you call the police or turn him in to the state medical licensure board?
  • No, but notifying the doctor in some way is indicated.
  • If this were a doctor in a group practice with you, the whole practice could be held liable, so in this scenario, you'd want to sort things out fast.
  • At the very least, I would send the physician a letter bring him or her up to date on the present condition of the patient. 
  • The problem and potential for malpractice will be immediately apparent.
  • Should a hospital or clinic curtail or restrict his privileges, then the medical licensure board must be notified. 
  • Do you advise the patient to get a lawyer and sue the guy?
  • No. Your obligation is to provide medical service to the patient, but should he ask your advice on the matter, you should be honest, straightforward and candid.
  • If your conversation leads to a complaint or suit, so be it.
