The second AMA standard obviously addresses this issue.
- Do you call the police
or turn him in to the state medical licensure board?
- No, but notifying the
doctor in some way is indicated.
- If this were a doctor
in a group practice with you, the whole practice could be held liable, so
in this scenario, you'd want to sort things out fast.
- At the very least, I
would send the physician a letter bring him or her up to date on the present
condition of the patient.
- The problem and potential
for malpractice will be immediately apparent.
- Should a hospital or
clinic curtail or restrict his privileges, then the medical licensure board
must be notified.
- Do you advise the patient
to get a lawyer and sue the guy?
- No. Your obligation is
to provide medical service to the patient, but should he ask your advice
on the matter, you should be honest, straightforward and candid.
- If your conversation
leads to a complaint or suit, so be it.
