Jennifer has diabetes and she's in ketoacidosis.
  • Believe it or not, this is the way most juvenile diabetics present.
  • Overt ketoacidosis, presenting with flu-like symptoms.
  • Kussmaul breathing.
  • Fruity odor to her breath.
    • Ketones are "boiling off" in the lungs.
  • Note the low pH of the urine.
  • Large amount of glucose.
  • Large amount of ketones.
  • One must be careful so as not to precipitously drop her serum sugar. Treat her yes, but don't drive it through the floor.
    • CNS sugars are still high and will serve as an osmotic drawing force, causing cerebral edema.
  • With today's closer monitoring, it is hoped to avoid the long-term renal problems of diabetes. Here's an example of diabetic nephropathy that may develop later.
