Opportunistic infections
account for 80% of deaths in AIDS patients.
-
P. carinii pneumonia
is the presenting symptom in 20% of patients, and at least 50% of patients
develop the infection at some time.
-
P. carinii is very likely
in patients with CD4+ cell <200/ul.
-
Candidiasis (thrush especially)
is the most common fungal infection.
-
Disseminated Candidiasis is
not common in patients with AIDS, and generally occurs when there is concomitant
drug induced leukopenia.

CMV chorioretinitis occurs in
approximately 25% of AIDS patients.
-
Approximately 40% of AIDS patients
have evidence of disseminated Atypical Mycobacteria. In some autopsy
studies, it approaches 80%.
