Central Nervous System Involvement, Continued

AIDS related cognitive-motor complex.
  • dementia (mental slowing)
  • memory loss
  • mood disturbances (apathy, depression)
  • motor disturbances (ataxia)
  • bladder and bowel incontinence
  • seizures
Pathologic findings in CNS involvement.
  • Grossly, there is mild diffuse atrophy with sulcal widening.
  • Dispersed microglial nodules seen microscopically.
  • Within the microglial nodules are macrophage-derived multinucleated giant cells.
  • Microscopic areas of necrosis with reactive gliosis.
