Neurologic Manifestations in Children

Neurologic manifestations are common in children with congenital AIDS.
  • Neurologic deficits evident in first years.
  • Microcephaly
  • Mental retardation
  • Delay in motor development
  • Spasticity of limbs
  • Calcification of basal ganglia blood vessels.
  • Delay in myelination
  • Microglial nodules with multinucleated giant cells.
  • Increased incidence of opportunistic CNS infections; CMV, toxoplasmosis, cryptococcosis.
