Stages of HIV Infection
 
Early, acute phase

 
 

Illness Phase


Clinical findings
  • Self limiting, flu-like, febrile illness in 50-70% of patients.
  • Rash
  • Cervical lymphadenopathy
  • Diarrhea and vomiting
  • Symptoms develop 3-6 weeks after infection
  • Symptoms spontaneously resolves 2-4 weeks later.
The early, acute phase is characterized by:
  • High level of virus production
  • Wide spread infection and seeding of lymphoid tissues.
  • Rarely recognized as HIV infection.
