Mr. BA complains of ease of bruising. In fact, he can't even remember where or how gets all his bruises. He was fine until about 8 months ago. His wife brought him in for evaluation. He has a rather prominent abdomen. There are several small vascular lesions on his face and chest. His PT is 17 seconds (reference = 11) His aPTT is 48 seconds (reference = 20 - 32)

• His CBC reveals a normal platelet count but some odd shaped RBCs are present.

• How you can you have both a prolonged PT and aPTT?  Isn't it one or the other?
• Besides, bruising indicates a platelet problem. This doesn't make sense.
• What's more, it sounds like he wasn't born with a clotting factor deficiency.

Is it possible to develop an acquired prolongation of both PT and aPTT?               Back
