Mr. Harvey provides additional history.
  • While participating in a diabetic screening at College Mall six months ago, he was found to have a non-fasting blood sugar of 246 mg/dL.
  • He went to a local walk-in clinic, had a glucose tolerance test and was told he definitely had diabetes.
  • He thinks his maternal grandmother had diabetes late in life, but otherwise is not aware of the condition in his immediate family.
  • He was started on an oral hypoglycemic agent, but never acquired satisfactory control of his blood sugar.
  • He was eventually placed on insulin, but has had difficulty working out the proper dose.
  • He works with a glucometer, and has had to increase his insulin dose three times in the last three months.
  • One of the blood samples drawn by the paramedics at the scene was submitted for a blood sugar, and the result has just come back: 42mg/dL.
