Pathogenesis of cervical epithelial lesions.

Spectrum of changes related to injury and/or chronic irritation.

  • Metaplasia: 
    • transference of one type of mature epithelium for another, almost always a consequence of chronic irritation.
  • Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN):
    • Formerly known as dysplasia.
    • Continuum of atypical changes (CIN I - III)
    • May regress or progress (progression related to severity of precancerous change.
    • Often associated with HPV
  • PAP smear screening is very effective for early detection.
