Beyond the direct effects of the infection, there's the chance of two possible hypersensitivity reactions.

  • Type II hypersensitivity:
    • Antibodies against the bug cross react with host tissues.
    • Rheumatic heart disease.
    • Antibody reacts with ground substance, affecting:
      • endocardium (right)
      • myocardium and even
      • pericardium
  • Type III hypersensitivity:
    •  Antigen-antibody complex disease.
    • Tissues injured are innocent by-standers.
    • Immune complexes are trapped in the glomerulus.
    • Complement is fixed.
    • PMNs respond, destroying the glomerulus.
Better act fast to prevent the hypersensitivity problem.                                        Back
