  • Serological conversion
    • Presence of specific antibodies in the blood.   (Viral hepatitis)
    • Acute (right now) and convalescent (4 - 6 weeks later) titers.

  • Specific histologic patterns
  • (appearance in tissue)
    • granuloma (TB and some fungi)
    • purulent or suppurative (pyogenic organisms)
    • Specific cytopathic changes
      • nuclear changes seen with herpes and papilloma viruses
