  • Cirrhosis is a chronic, progressive, inflammatory and scaring condition of the liver that can have a number of etiologies.
  • Although alcohol abuse is the most common cause in the US, it's not the only etiology.
  • Pathologic features common to all forms of cirrhosis:
    • Destruction of underlying architectural framework.
    • Injury and fibrosis are diffuse.
    • Botched attempts at regeneration produce useless nodules, not lobules.
    • Profound vascular reorganization leads to portal hypertension.
