  • Between 15 and 30 deaths annually in Indiana.
  • Different types.
    • Smothering can look like SIDS
    • Physical
    • Emotional
    • Sexual
  • May be subtle.
  • All demographics.
  • With physical abuse, look for facial and truncal injuries.
  • Head injury is the leading cause of death.
  • May require full X-Ray series to look for healed fractures.
  • Call the local Welfare Office if you suspect it.
  • Have criteria so you are not causing needless investigations.
