Of course we want to treat his anemia.
  • Sure, the first thing is always find the cause and start dealing with it.
  • But we're not calling it quits having removed his tumor.
  • In Mr. Herbert's case, it took years to deplete his iron stores, it'll take years to replenish them.
    • Actually, dietary intake will meet only daily loss.
  • We can certainly speed that process up a lot.
  • How about giving him a transfusion.
    • No, that's certainly not called for.
    • If he had a truly low hemoglobin we might consider it.
    • We also might consider a transfusion if he had a problem exacerbated by his anemia, like cerebral vascular or cardiac related problems.
    • Transfusions are not risk free, although problems are less today.
