Uterus

The uterus has several layers. Be able to identify the inner two and their components on this virtual microscopic slide of UTERUS.
  • The myometrium makes up most of the uterine wall and consists primarily of irregular bundles of smooth muscle.
  • The endometrium is the innermost layer of the uterine wall. It consists of a thin basal layer of primarily connective tissue adjacent to the myometrium, and a thicker functional layer adjacent to the uterine cavity. The surface is covered by simple columnar epithelium invaginated to form tubular uterine glands. Periodic changes in components of the functional layer occur during the uterine or menstrual cycle.

This image shows the basal endometrium and superficial myometrium.
