The ovaries are homologous to the male testes. Within the ovaries,
the female gametes (oocytes) and the hormones estrogen and progesterone
are produced. The ovaries are situated one on each side of the
uterus close to the lateral wall of the pelvis. Each ovary is
almond-shaped and supported by the broad ligament of the uterus.
