Areolar Connective Tissue

All connective tissues consist of three basic components:
  • cells,
  • fibers, and
  • ground substance.

The proportions and nature of these three components vary in the different connective tissues depending on their location and function. In this slide of AREOLAR CONNECTIVE TISSUE (often called simply “loose connective” tissue), observe the loose arrangement of the collagen fibers.

Here one can see the delicate, and unorganized, arrangement of the collagen fibers comprising this example of areolar connective tissue. Note the nuclei of the fibrobalsts, the cells responsible for making the collagen The nucleus of the fibroblast is about all one can distinguish in the background of the collagen fibers and ground substance.
