Cerebellum
 
 

The cerebellum coordinates skeletal muscle movement, and helps maintain balance and posture. The little rectangle in the image to the left is the area of enlargement below.

The cerebellum's surface layer, the cortex, is composed of gray matter, and is highly folded over a thin core of white matter. In this section of CEREBELLUM, note the larger, distinctive Purkinje cells regularly arranged within the cortex parallel to its surface.
