maintain balance and posture. The little rectangle in the image to the left is the area of enlargement below. |

The cerebellum's surface layer, the
cortex, is composed of gray matter, and is highly folded
over a thin core of white matter. In this section of
CEREBELLUM, note the larger, distinctive
Purkinje cells regularly arranged within the cortex parallel to its
surface.
