Small Intestine

This virtual slide of the SMALL INTESTINE is a cross section of the ileum. In this slide be sure you can identify the following:
  • Simple columnar epithelium (with goblet cells):
    • The epithelium covers finger-like villi (singular: villus) projecting into the opening of the intestine, each with a lacteal (lymph capillary) in its center.
    • Microvillous border—a thin line indicating the very small microvilli on the free surface of the epithelial cells.
  • Muscularis — note orientation of smooth muscle into an inner circular layer and an outer longitudinal layer.

The little box in the image above indicates the where the picture to the left came from. Using this as a guide, be sure you can identify the elements outlined above.

I don't see the virtual slide, I must need the download.
