Although
destructive on their own accord, the Borrelia organisms elicit
an immune response far out of proportion to their numbers.
In stage 2, the organisms
spread hematogenously, involving the vascular system in many organs.

Meningitis, myocarditis, cardiac
arrhythmias, cranial neuritis.

Borrelia that
evade host antibody and T-cell response, sequester themselves in
the CNS and endothelial cells. Here's a section of tissue
showing the vasculitis.

Borrelia bind
to galactocerebroside in myelin.

Induce cytokines in CNS
such as IL-6 and TNF-alpha.
