The
late
disseminated stage of Lyme disease may evolve over 2 or 3 years.
In stage 3 of the
disease, the organisms sequestered in various parts of the body elicit
a profound localized inflammatory reaction.

Host immune reaction is out
of proportion to the small number of organisms.

Immune system seems to be over
reacting to the spirochete's heat-shock proteins.

The Borrelia can cause
a
chronic arthritis, often with profound joint damage. Large
joints most severely effected.

Some people develop an encephalitis
which may be debilitating.
