  • Hormones and hormone like substances produced by the tumor causing remote illness and symptoms, not related to direct organ invasion by the cancer.
  • Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) inducing hyponatremia (small cell carcinoma predominately).
  • Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) causing Cushing's syndrome (small cell carcinoma predominately).
  • Parathyroid and parathyroid-related peptide causing hypercalcemia (squamous cell carcinoma predominately).
  • Calcitonin causing hypocalcemia.
  • Gonadotropins causing gynecomastia in men (breast development).
  • Serotonin causing carcinoid syndrome (bronchial adenomas).
  • Eaton-Lambert syndrome. A myasthenic condition producing muscle weakness.
  • Hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy (clubbing of the fingers and toes).
