Staging the lesion at the time of discovery is important for prognosis and decisions on treatment.  Unfortunately, lung cancers don't follow many rules. They are among the most aggressive and unpredictable of malignancies.

Tumor size (3 cm or greater) and local extent; pleural, chest wall, trachea, esophagus, carina, etc.

 (nodes)
No nodal involvement; ipsilateral; contralateral; mediastinal; distant.
M  (0-1)
(metastasis)
Presence or absence of distant metastasis; bone, brain, kidney, etc.
