Bronchogenic carcinomas are classified by their histologic appearance. There are four major groups.

1. Squamous cell (epidermoid) carcinoma  (25-40%)
2. Adenocarcinomas  (25-40%)
       Bronchial derived
       Acinar; papillary; solid
       Bronchioalveolar
3. Small cell carcinomas
       Oat cell (lymphocyte like)
       Intermediate (polygonal)
4. Large cell carcinomas
       Undifferentiated; giant cell; clear cell

A fifth category would include tumors combining two or more histologic patterns. Typically it's squamous and adeno.

Neuroendocrine tumors, such as bronchial carcinoids, are considered a group by themsleves.
