Quiz & Evaluation

Evaluation of operative status for someone with Mr. Helms' disease would include some or all of the following:
  • Pulmonary function studies. You better find out before he goes to surgery if there's enough pulmonary function to get by on one lung. Remember these guys have bad emphysema too. You don't want to find out in the surgical recovery room while you're trying to get him off the ventilator.
  • Bone scan. Bone involvement makes this a Stage IV malignancy and therefore not a surgical candidate.
  • CT of head. Same as above. Brain metastasis make him a Stage IV.
  • Abdominal and chest CT. As above, we are looking for mediastinal, liver, adrenal, kidney and whatever else involvement.
Here's the scoop on Mr. Helms pre-operative evaluation.       Back
