Mr.
Helm's reaction to the situation was one of resignation.

hospice program.

He underwent a series of radiation
treatments, to both the primary and several of the metastatic lesions.

He tried, but could not tolerate
the chemotherapy.

He continued to smoke.
Two months after his diagnosis,
he experienced a seizure while watching television, no doubt due
to his cerebral metastases. He decided it was unsafe to continue
to drive.
A week later, while
riding the cross-town bus, a metastatic nodule eroded into his pulmonary
artery and he exsanguinated.
