Mr. Helm's reaction to the situation was one of resignation.
  • He became involved in a local hospice program.
  • He underwent a series of radiation treatments, to both the primary and several of the metastatic lesions.
  • He tried, but could not tolerate the chemotherapy.
  • He continued to smoke.
Two months after his diagnosis, he experienced a seizure while watching television, no doubt due to his cerebral metastases. He decided it was unsafe to continue to drive.

A week later, while riding the cross-town bus, a metastatic nodule eroded into his pulmonary artery and he exsanguinated.
