 We'll get back to Mr. Raymond in just a bit.  Right now we're going to look at atherosclerosis, how it develops and what happens.

First, we need to have the terminology straight.

The commonly used term arteriosclerosis is not specific and means only hardening of the arteries. From the standpoint of a mechanism of disease, it tells us nothing. The term refers to

  • thickening and 
  • loss of elasticity of arterial walls.
There are three basic conditions grouped within the broad term of  arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
