Risk factors for atherosclerosis.
  • Genetics: The single most important predictive element in the development of atherosclerosis. Bad genes = bad disease.
  • Age: Symptomatic atherosclerosis increases with age.
  • Sex: Males are more prone throughout life.
  • Hypertension: Accelerates vascular injury. BP of 169/95 mmHg carries a 5X increased risk over BP of 140/90.
  • Cigarette smoking: Carbon monoxide is thought to cause vascular injury. One or more packs a day increases risk 2X.
  • Diabetes: Hyperlipidemia and other factors increase risk.
  • Elevated plasma homocysteine: Endothelial dysfunction.
  • Factors affecting thrombosis and platelet aggregation.
  • Hyperlipidemia: Most significantly hypercholesterolemia.
