  • People with high LDL and low HDL cholesterol levels have an increased risk for atherosclerosis.
  • Genetic defects of lipoprotein metabolism are known to increase risk of atherosclerosis.
  • Hypercholesterolemia may cause endothelial cell dysfunction.
  • Oxidation of LDL by free radicals generated by macrophages and monocytes
    • serves as chemotactin for circulating monocytes,
    • increases monocyte adhesion,
