As if all the forgoing weren't enough, here are some potentially serious complications of peptic ulcer disease.

1.  Anemia

  • Most frequent complication, 10-20% of patients
  • May be life threatening, accounts for 25% of deaths.
  • May be first indication of the ulcer.
2. Perforation
  • Occurs in only 5% of patients, but accounts for two thirds of deaths.
3. Obstruction from scarring and/or edema.
  • Occurs in about 2% of patients, most often in those with pyloric channel ulcers.
  • Incapacitating cramping abdominal pain.
  • Rarely total obstruction and intractable vomiting.
