if all the forgoing weren't enough, here are some potentially serious complications
of peptic ulcer disease.
1. Anemia
-
Most frequent complication,
10-20% of patients
-
May be life threatening, accounts
for 25% of deaths.
-
May be first indication of the
ulcer.
2. Perforation
-
Occurs in only 5% of patients,
but accounts for two thirds of deaths.
3. Obstruction from scarring
and/or edema.
-
Occurs in about 2% of patients,
most often in those with pyloric channel ulcers.
-
Incapacitating cramping abdominal
pain.
-
Rarely total obstruction and
intractable vomiting.
