I'll bet you already knew the answers, but if not, here are few hints.
  • What physical finding is consistent with Mr. Jones' recent blood loss?   Go back and look at is blood pressures, supine and standing. What will account for the difference?
  • The history of melanotic stools is indicative of bleeding where in the GI tract?   Remember the blood will be digested the same as food. It's this property that results in the black and tarry quality. Where would the digestion process begin?
  • Is there anything other than hemorrhage that might account for melenotic stools?   Think about the appearance produced by some medications.  Bismuth sulfate for example.
