Opportunistic infections account for 80% of deaths in AIDS patients.
  • Cryptococcosis occurs in approximately 10% of AIDS patients. Meningitis is the major manifestation.
  • Central nervous system infection with Toxoplasmosis gondii accounts for 50% of all CNS masses.
  • Herpes simplex causes mucosal ulcerations in the mouth, esophagus, external genitalia, perianal skin.
  • Cryptospordiosis accounts for the majority of the chronic diarrhea.
  • Diarrhea also results from Salmonella, Shigella, and Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare.
  • Recurrent bacterial pneumonias result from depressed humoral immunity.
