Associated Neoplasms

Patients with AIDS have a high incidence of certain malignancies.
  • Kaposi sarcoma (KS)
  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Cervical carcinoma in women
Kaposi sarcoma (KS), a tumor of mesenchymal cell origin.
  • Other than in AIDS patients, KS is rare.
  • KS is the most common neoplasm in AIDS patients.
  • KS is more common in homosexual and bisexual men with AIDS than those who contracted AIDS through intravenous drug use.
  • KS sometimes arise early, even before there is significant immune system compromise. 
  • Grossly, the lesions appear as purple-red raised subcutaneous nodules.
  • Causative cell is likely a mesenchymal cell capable of forming vascular channels.
  • Association with novel herpes virus KS herpes (KSHV) in virtually 100% of cases.
